Itecons confirms SunTube thermal performance

Intura SunTube scores highly on thermal performance according to independent Itecons report

The thermal performance of Intura SunTube Daylight Sun Tunnel Systems has been independently verified in a new report by research institute Itecons. In this study, the UST values were calculated for the ST25, ST35 and ST55 systems, which are suitable for both flat and pitched roofs.

This is relevant for clients, architects, roofing professionals and end users. Today's daylight solutions must not only bring in plenty of natural light, but also meet the requirements of an energy-efficient building envelope. It is precisely on this point that the Intura SunTube demonstrates that daylight entry and insulation value can go hand in hand.

Independently calculated according to recognised standards

According to the report, performance has been assessed in accordance with EAD 220021-00-0402, the French method Règles Th-U Fascicule 3 and the standards ISO 10077-2:2017 and ISO 10211:2017. This means that the thermal performance of the various components of the Intura SunTube has been calculated in a recognised and reproducible manner.

This means that not only individual components have been examined, but also the thermal performance of the complete system. This is an important signal for the market: the performance of the Intura SunTube is not based on assumptions, but on an independent and technically substantiated calculation.

UST values without additional insulation

The results show that the Intura SunTube delivers strong thermal performance even without additional insulation. The calculated UST values are:

  • 2.44 W/m²K for ST25
  • 2.63 W/m²K for ST35
  • 2.70 W/m²K for ST55

These values form the basis of the system's performance and show that the Intura SunTube already has a solid technical foundation in its standard configuration.

Significant improvement with EcoPower insulation element

Performance improves significantly when an optional insulation element is used. In the report, this insulation element is included as a combination of PIR panels, aluminium tunnel connectors and double or triple glazing.

SunTube552.70 W/m²K0.91 W/m²K0.65 W/m²K
With this, Intura demonstrates that a premium daylight tube system can not only perform well visually and aesthetically, but can also be among the best on the market in terms of insulation and energy efficiency.

Structure of the Intura SunTube system

The report describes that the Intura SunTube systems consist of a light-transmitting dome, a curb, a highly reflective aluminium tunnel, a diffuser and, optionally, an additional insulation element. For all three systems, this insulation element is included in the thermal calculations.

This system structure is important because the final thermal performance is not determined by a single component, but by the interaction of all components. The Intura SunTube is therefore more than just a light tunnel: it is a well-designed daylight system that has been developed with an eye for both light output and building physics performance.

Daylight solution for energy-efficient buildings

The findings of the Itecons report underline that high-quality daylight solutions can perfectly meet the requirements of modern, energy-efficient buildings. This is an important advantage for homes, non-residential buildings and renovation projects. Natural daylight provides greater comfort and a more pleasant indoor climate, while good thermal performance contributes to an efficient building envelope.

This positions the Intura SunTube as a strong solution for projects where daylighting, insulation value and energy performance must go hand in hand.

With the independent report from Itecons, Intura has strong technical evidence of the thermal performance of the SunTube ST25, ST35 and ST55. The results show that the systems already perform well without additional insulation, but with the EcoPower insulation element, they become particularly strong solutions for energy-efficient applications.

For those looking for a daylight solution that does more than just bring in light, these results confirm that the Intura SunTube is also a compelling choice in terms of thermal performance.
